Introduction

Discussions about autism often focus too much on the terminology rather than more pressing issues. Some believe that the language used to describe autism significantly influences how individuals see themselves and how society perceives them. Unfortunately, one of the most debated topics in the autism community is whether to use identity-first language (“autistic person”) or person-first language (“person with autism”), while far more critical concerns remain unaddressed. This debate is often reduced to discussions about grammar, subculture, and politics, neglecting the broader implications for identity, self-advocacy, and societal perceptions of autism.

The Impact of Bias

Scientific studies play a crucial role in shaping public conversations about autism, but research is often biased. Studies that support identity-first language are more likely to be published in major journals, while research presenting alternative perspectives sometimes struggles to gain visibility.
