Art has always been both a fascination and a challenge for me. As an autistic adult and artist, I experience art as a unique way to understand, organize, and connect with the world around me. Art is not just a medium for creation; it is a language, a sanctuary, and a tool for making sense of life. Reflecting on the various roles art has played throughout history and its significance in my life and for others with autism provides a deeply personal and nuanced perspective.

Art as Structure and Craft

I find immense comfort in the structured nature of art from classical antiquity and the Middle Ages. During these periods, art was primarily considered a craft, governed by clear frameworks and rules dictated by institutions like the Church or royal courts. This predictability resonates deeply with me; I thrive on structure, and the emphasis on technical perfection and craftsmanship mirrors my own approach to creativity.
